Earthballs
2 species
Puffball-like fungi with a thick, tough rind and a firm interior that turns dark early, releasing spores by cracking rather than through a pore. Despite their appearance they are related to boletes. Many are ectomycorrhizal, and all should be treated as poisonous.
Fruitbody: round, stalkless or with a short pseudostem, attached by mycelial cords. Peridium: thick, smooth to scaly or warted. Gleba: purplish black to dark brown, powdery at maturity. Spores: globose, spiny to reticulate.
