Common Earthball
A firm, stalkless, puffball-like fungus with a thick, ochre-yellow skin broken into coarse warts or scales and an interior that turns purple-black early. Unlike a true puffball, it has no apical pore; it cracks open to release its spores. It is poisonous and is a classic puffball look-alike.
Poisonous. Eating it causes gastrointestinal distress in people and animals, and inhaling spores can irritate eyes and nose. It is mistaken for puffballs and truffles: a true edible puffball is pure white and soft throughout when sliced, while an earthball is firm with a dark interior and a thick rind. Slice every puffball top to bottom.
