Chicken Fat Mushroom
A slender, slimy, bright yellow slippery jack that fruits in dense troops under five-needle pines, especially eastern white pine. The cap carries reddish streaks or patches and cottony veil remnants on the margin, and the often crooked stem is covered with reddish-brown glandular dots. DNA work treats the western and Eurasian Suillus sibiricus as the same species.
Nonpoisonous and sometimes eaten, but opinions on its quality are mixed; the slimy cuticle and pore layer are usually removed, which leaves little flesh. Touching it can cause allergic contact dermatitis in sensitive people (see Safety in notes). Suillus species upset some people's stomachs.
