A minute dung cup fungus with some of the largest ascospores known, each wrapped in a gelatinous sheath. It is a classic genetics model. Spore-colour mutants such as the b2 gene let researchers score meiotic recombination directly in asci, and its premeiotic DNA methylation process (MIP) is used to study how methylation suppresses crossing-over.
Not edible: microscopic in scale and of no food value.
Never eat a wild mushroom based on a web page — confirm with an expert.
Mycology is an evolving science: names, classifications and safety information change as research advances. Entries are compiled from cited sources and reviewed, but may be incomplete or out of date — check the sources, and never rely on this library alone to identify or eat a mushroom.
