An insect-associated mould first isolated from ghost moth (Hepialidae) larvae in Qinghai and long sold as 'Paecilomyces hepiali'. Strain Cs-4, grown by submerged fermentation, is the base of the prescription Chinese patent medicine Jinshuibao and more than 260 Chinese health products. It is chemically similar to Ophiocordyceps sinensis but genetically distinct. It is known as a mould, not as a fruiting mushroom.
Not a food mushroom. It is consumed only as fermented mycelium in supplements and as the Chinese prescription medicine Jinshuibao. No toxicity data were found in the sources reviewed. Its pharmacological claims rest mainly on traditional attributions and preclinical work.

Mycology is an evolving science: names, classifications and safety information change as research advances. Entries are compiled from cited sources and reviewed, but may be incomplete or out of date — check the sources, and never rely on this library alone to identify or eat a mushroom.
