Royal Bolete
A rare European butter bolete with a pink to red cap, bright yellow pores and a stout yellow netted stem. It is a choice edible in southern Europe. It is red-listed in several countries and legally protected in Britain, where picking is forbidden. Californian mushrooms once called B. regius have since been described as separate species.
A choice edible, compared with the cep in Italy, but rare, red-listed in several countries and protected in Britain under Schedule 8 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act, where picking is forbidden; do not collect it. First Nature names the ruby bolete (Hortiboletus rubellus) as a look-alike: it is much smaller, grows in groups and has a striate rather than netted stem.

Mycology is an evolving science: names, classifications and safety information change as research advances. Entries are compiled from cited sources and reviewed, but may be incomplete or out of date — check the sources, and never rely on this library alone to identify or eat a mushroom.
