A glutinous, olive- to brownish-yellow woodwax of North American pine forests, with gills that turn from white to yellow and a slimy stem. Collections were long reported as the European Hygrophorus hypothejus. Moreau et al. (2018) described it as a new species from pine forests in eastern and western North America.
Edibility is not established for this species, and it is not recommended. It was formerly included in H. hypothejus, and edible reports for that group (Mykoweb: 'edible, but untried locally') do not separate this species. Confirm the white spore print and waxy, decurrent gills; slimy Cortinarius species under pines have a cobwebby veil and rusty-brown spores.
