Hypholoma lateritium (Schaeff.) P. Kumm. (syn. H. sublateritium) forms dense clusters of brick-red capped mushrooms on hardwood stumps and logs in autumn. It is edible and is cultivated on hardwood logs in Japan ('kuritake') and by hobbyists elsewhere because it fruits in cold weather. It must be distinguished from the toxic H. fasciculare.
