Sooty Head
A grey to blackish Tricholoma with a slimy, radially streaked cap and a stem that usually develops yellow tints. It grows with conifers, especially pine, and is a traditional edible in Europe. Several grey Tricholomas resemble it, and some are poisonous.
Edible and traditionally eaten in Europe, but only with expert identification. Look-alikes: T. virgatum (acrid, bitter; causes stomach upset), T. pardinum (scaly cap; poisonous) and the yellow T. equestre (linked to rhabdomyolysis). Eat only modest amounts.
Never eat a wild mushroom based on a web page — confirm with an expert.
