Grey Knight
A small to medium grey Tricholoma with a finely felty to scaly cap and whitish gills, usually fruiting in dense groups under conifers. It is traditionally eaten in Europe, but grey Tricholomas are difficult to identify and include poisonous species. The name T. myomyces, used in North America for forms with a cortina-like veil, is now usually treated as a synonym.
Eaten in Europe and sold in French markets, but use caution. It resembles the poisonous T. pardinum (larger, scalier, mealy odour) and the acrid T. virgatum. A 2014 chemical study raised rhabdomyolysis concerns; later work found the suspected toxins negligible in fruit bodies. North American material may be a different species.
